Day One:

  • Depart the U.S.A. - your journey begins!

Overnight: Flight

Day Two:

  • Arrive at Vienna International Airport.
  • Meet your driver at the airport who will transfer you to the hotel.
  • Check into the hotel. (Official hotel check-in is from 3:00 p.m., if your room isn't ready upon arrival you can leave your luggage with the concierge.)
  • Remainder of the day at leisure to get acclimated and explore on your own.
  • Dinner on your own and evening at leisure.

Overnight: Vienna

Day Three:

  • ? Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Meet your tour guide in the lobby and depart the hotel.
  • Take a panoramic orientation tour along the Ringstrasse, the main avenue circling the city center, for a view of the city's main landmarks, including:
    • The ancient Hofberg Palace. This grand complex of a Capella and castles was once the seat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
    • Prater Amusement Park. This 120-year-old park contains old and new attractions for all ages.
    • The impressive architecture of the UN Buildings, which are the 3rd built after New York and Geneva.
    • St. Peter's Cathedral, the oldest church in Vienna.
    • Visit St. Stephen's Cathedral (also known as Stephansdom), one of the city's most iconic symbols, the main Roman Catholic church in Vienna and the seat of the city's Archbishop. Enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the top of the cathedral. Before walking up 343 stairs, enjoy the colorful architecture and don't miss the large bell placed in the top of the tower.
  • Enjoy the best of Vienna's delights, while strolling through the Naschmarket, the city's most popular food market.
  • Lunch on own in the market.
  • Visit the Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens, the former imperial summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs.
  • Return to the hotel.
  • Dinner on own, with an opportunity to enjoy the well-known Viennese and European culinary delights the city has to offer.

Day Four:

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Free day to explore the city on your own, with the opportunity to:
    • Immerse yourself in culture at one of Vienna's many famous art museums. Options include the Belvedere Palace, which includes the largest collection of Klimt paintings in Vienna, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the city's world-renowned Museum of Fine Arts, and the Albertina Museum, housing one of the largest print collections in the world, and many more.
    • Enjoy the best of Vienna's delights, while strolling through the Naschmarket, the city's most popular food market.
    • Stroll through the Golden Quarter and Kohlmarkt in the old city, the city's most elegant shopping streets, and enjoy the vibrant life that Vienna has to offer.
    • Explore the Museums Quartier, an art complex comprising the Leopold Museum, with its numerous works by Schiele, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Kunsthalle, an exhibition hall for contemporary art, and various artists' workshops.
    • Visit the Dorotheum, one of the world's oldest auction houses, established in 1707. Take the opportunity for an early view of works of art, antiques, furniture, and jewelry from various centuries that are put up for auction.
    • Take a stroll in the music themed Stadtpark, a park stretching on both sides of the river. Walk along statues of various composers (Strauss, Schubert, Bruckner, etc.) scattered throughout the park.
    • Take a bike ride with Citybike public rental service and ride through the city. Pedal through popular locales such as: the Prater, along the Donaukanal and around the Alte and Neue Donau, on the Donauinsel, or a panoramic circle on the Ring bike path.
    • Ride Vienna's famous Giant Ferris Wheel for great views of the city.
    • Take a boat ride on the Danube River. With a glass of a local drink in hand, you can appreciate a new perspective of the capital of Austria.
    • Take a glimpse into the life of the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud at the museum in his name, located in the apartment where he lived and worked till he was forced into exile by the Nazis. In the museum you will be able to view photos, personal belongings and rare footage.
    • Visit Mozarthaus, Mozart's only remaining Viennese residence. View portraits of Mozart's years in Vienna, original sheet music, letters and musical instruments and a host of interactive audio-visuals.

Overnight: Vienna

Day Five:

  • Breakfast at the hotel and check out.
  • Meet your guide in the hotel lobby and depart. 
  • Begin driving west towards Salzburg.
  • Enter the city and take a panoramic view around Salzburg's Baroque-style old town with its beautiful churches and cathedrals. This city is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the setting of The Sound of Music, and the home of the famous Salzburg Music Festival. 
  • Visit Geburtshaus, the house where Mozart was born. Sample the original musical instruments and learn about this popular composer's childhood through his childhood house, artifacts and toys.
  • Lunch on your own, en route.
  • Look up or climb up to the Salzburg Castle - this irresistible castle held the fort for Salzburg for over 600 years.
  • Walk into the Salzburg Cathedral, the largest church in Austria with space for over 10,000 people.
  • Check into the hotel.
  • Dinner on your own and evening at leisure.

Day Six:

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Meet your guide in the hotel lobby and begin your musical journey.
  • Visit the landscapes and locations where The Sound of Music, the famous musical, was filmed:
    • Stroll through the Hellbrunn Castle garden, where 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' was shot.
    • Visit the Mondsee Chapel, the same location of Maria and Captain Von Trapp's wedding.
    • Stop by the Nonnberg Abbey Monastery, the monastery where Maria started off as a nun.
    • Walk through Mirable Gardens, and stop by the Pegasus statue, where the famous song of “Do-Re-Me” was sung.
    • View the Leopoldscron Castle, the family's home in the movie, with its famous hallway and Ballroom.
  • Lunch on your own, en route.
  • Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure to explore the city on your own.
  • Dinner on your own and evening at leisure.

Overnight: Salzburg

Day Seven:

  • Breakfast at the hotel and check out.
  • Transfer to Salzburg Airport.
  • Departure flight to the U.S.A., arriving the same day.

Opposite Salzburg Hauptbahnhof railway station, this modern hotel is a 14-minute walk from Mirabell Palace and 2.9 km from the Haus der Natur natural history museum. The bright, contemporary rooms come with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Room service is available. There's a chic restaurant, a terrace and a bar.

  • Group rates are per person based on double occupancy and a minimum of 20 full paying participants per vehicle. Should the number of participants drop below the minimum listed above, we will adjust the cost of the trip to reflect the additional expense of operating the program.
  • Tour prices are per person in U.S. dollars. All hotel accommodations, motor coach transportation, special dinners, sightseeing, admissions, luggage handling and the services of local guides, drivers, and the Expedition Educator are included.
  • Hotel Accommodations: The tour price includes all hotel accommodations, in hotel rooms with private baths. Our standard is to provide the best available hotels while considering value. Although the level of the accommodations may differ slightly from hotel to hotel, we are committed to your comfort. Two-bed rooms are reserved in most hotels. Triples are two-bed rooms with a rollaway cot where available and are not recommended when considering the comfort of those in the room. King-size beds are not available in most hotels; what is considered king-size usually consists of two single beds pushed together and made up separately, but with one headboard. Some two-bed rooms may have two twin - not full- or queen-size - beds.
  • Meals are included as specified in the itinerary.
  • Expedition Educator: All trips are conducted by our Expedition Educators or local guides who remain with the group throughout the tour.
  • Gratuities Included: All gratuities for restaurant and hotel staff.
  • Luggage Responsibility: All tour packages allow one piece of luggage per person and one carry-on bag. Excess luggage will be subject to charge of up to $100 per piece. The Travel Agent and/or Tour Operator shall not be held responsible for any damage to or loss of luggage/personal items. All damage/loss must be reported at time of incident and documented in writing by local authorities for submission to your insurance company.
  • Escorted tour packages are based upon a minimum number of participants. Cancellation of any tour for lack of participation will be advised at least 30 days prior to the tour's departure, and all money will be refunded. Landmark Cultural Expeditions will not be held responsible for any costs relating to the issuance and/or cancellation of airline tickets or visa fees. Voluntary cancellations due to political instability, acts of terrorism, government intervention or US State Department warning will be subject to the above fees, provided the program is deemed (by Landmark Cultural Expeditions) able to continue. Should Landmark Cultural Expeditions elect to cancel a departure for any of these reasons, every effort will be made to obtain refunds from suppliers, however no guarantees can be provided on their behalf.  

Not Included

  • Airfare to the tour departure point and from the tour ending point is not included. 
  • Personal Expenses: All personal expenses such as: laundry, valet service, cables, telephone calls and postage are not included.
  • Tips to the tour educator and driver (recommended guidelines vary based on number of participants)
    • For a group of 20 passengers and more:
      $8 per participant per day for the tour educator, $5 per participant per day for the local guide & $3 per participant per day for the driver

Additional Information

  • Airline Security Measures: In the U.S., you must provide identification in the form of a passport at the time of airport check-in for travel to international destinations. Your passport name must match the name on your tour reservation and airline ticket or you may be denied boarding.
  • If you are traveling from an airport outside the jurisdiction of the U.S, you will need to determine what travel documentation and identification is required for that particular airport.
  • Due to heightened security regulations, certain items such as a metal nail file, pocketknife, cigarette lighter or tweezers, and some liquid, gel, or aerosol items may not be permitted in your carry-on luggage. Please call your airline prior to departure to obtain current information on non-permissible carry-on items and recommended airport check-in times. You may also wish to visit the Transportation Security Administration website at www.tsa.gov to obtain more information on acceptable identity documentation and prohibited luggage items.
  • Holidays and Museum Closures - Museum visits and personal shopping time may be disrupted due to unforeseen circumstances or the many religious, state and local holidays locally observed in the destinations being visited.
  • Photography During Tours: We will occasionally use photographs taken by fellow guests or your trip director for promotional purposes. If you prefer that your photo not be used in any marketing activities, please notify us at the start of your tour.
